Privacy Policy
Stridr plans running and cycling routes. This policy explains what the Stridr app and website ("Stridr", "we") collect, why, and what we don't do with it. The short version: no account, no advertising, no sale of data, and your location never leaves your device except as a start point for the route you asked for.
Who we are
Stridr is an independent app operated in the United Kingdom. Contact: stridr@duck.com.
What we collect and why
- Location (with your permission). Used to set the start point of a route, to show where you are on the map, and to give turn-by-turn cues while you follow a route. Live tracking starts only when you tap Start run or Start ride and stops when you end it. If you allow it, tracking and cues carry on while your phone is locked or another app is open, so a run isn't cut short; outside a run Stridr never uses your location in the background. Your position during a run is processed on your device and is not sent to our servers.
- Route requests. When you ask for a route we send the start point (and finish or via point, if you set one), the distance or time, and your preferences (activity, terrain, quiet roads, lit streets, and so on) to our server so it can build the route. Requests are cached by area so popular routes load faster; the cache holds coordinates rounded to roughly 200 m, not your exact position.
- Route feedback. If you tap Try another, start a run, or export a route, we record that as a thumbs-down or thumbs-up for that route, together with the request that produced it and any note you typed. This is what improves the routes over time. It is not linked to you personally.
- Route links. If you choose Send route link, the route (its line on the map, distance, name and activity) is saved on our server under a random link so the people you send it to can open it. Anyone with the link can view that route. It contains no details about you.
- Beta and launch emails. If you join the beta on stridr.co.uk, we store your email address so we can invite you and tell you when Stridr launches. We don't share it or use it for anything else, and we'll delete it if you ask.
- Technical logs. Our server keeps standard request logs (IP address, time, endpoint, response time) for security, rate limiting and debugging. Logs are retained for up to 30 days.
- Crash reports. If the app crashes we may receive a diagnostic report (device model, OS version, app version, the error) so we can fix it. These contain no location or personal details.
What we don't do
- No accounts, sign-in or name are required, and the app never asks for your email.
- No advertising, no ad tracking, no cross-app tracking, no data sale.
- No background location outside a run you started yourself.
- No analytics SDKs that profile you.
Third parties we rely on
- Maps — the app's map is Apple Maps, provided by Apple under its own privacy policy. Route planning uses public map data, run on our own server.
- Place search — search text you type in the Start, Finish or Route via fields is sent to our server, which looks it up in its own copy of public place data (and a public postcode lookup for UK postcodes). It isn't passed to a search company.
- Hosting — our server is a dedicated machine hosted in the EU (Finland). Place search, routing and map data all run on it; no request is passed to an outside routing or search company.
- Strava — only if you connect it in Settings. Finished runs and rides (GPS track, time, distance and name) are uploaded to your own Strava account, from your phone. Our server only helps sign you in; your Strava access stays on your phone and we don't read or keep any of your Strava data. Disconnect any time in Settings or on Strava.
- Apple Health — only if you turn on Save runs and rides to Health in Settings. Each finished run or ride is written to Apple Health on your iPhone as a workout with its route. Stridr never reads your health data, and nothing from Health is sent to us.
- Exporting a route hands a GPX file to the app you choose (Files, Strava, Garmin, and so on); what they do with it is covered by their policies.
Your choices
- Location permission can be changed at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Stridr. The app works without it: search a start or tap the map.
- Saving to Apple Health is off unless you turn it on, and can be switched off in the app's settings or in the Health app.
- Voice cues and haptics can be turned off in the app's settings.
- Your saved settings and last route live only on your device; deleting the app deletes them.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or object to processing. Because we hold no account data, requests usually concern server logs; email stridr@duck.com and we'll respond within 30 days. You can also complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk.
Children
Stridr is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes materially we'll update the date above and note it in the app.
